Education Program
The poultry industry is a large integrated agribusiness whose future success will rely on access to a skilled and motivated workforce. There are some 40,000 people directly employed and another 140,000 persons who depend on the poultry industry for employment.
While the level of education varies with the industry sector and enterprise, the overall level across the workforce is relatively low. This motivated the broad goal of the Australian Poultry CRC’s Education and Training Program: to achieve an increased level of skills for all sectors of the industry.
The operational plan for the Education and Training Program encompasses the outcomes listed in the Commonwealth Agreement and is also based on the conclusions of a CRC Education Forum held in 2004. It includes the following strategies:
- Education Objective 1:
- To conduct an audit of existing education and training courses and materials of relevance to persons working in the poultry industry, or who wish to pursue a career in the poultry industry, and to compile a regularly updated central repository of information about those courses and materials.
- Education Objective 2:
- To survey and consult with all levels of the industry to determine education and training needs and to identify shortcomings in what is currently available.
- Education Objective 3:
- To assist education providers to develop new courses and materials of relevance to the needs of the Australian poultry industries.
- Education Objective 4:
- To enhance the value to Australia of postgraduate researchers - training the new generation of poultry research scientists.
